Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third child of the family. The young woman was just a toddler when her father who was employed as a carnival barker died. Her mother had to perform tasks like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth was raised in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she attended the school. She quit school in just two years, to go into acting. Her chosen path proved to be fraught with difficulties and In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine, but theatrical work eluded her. The next position she was offered was a "hat check" woman at a nightclub before she gave up and relocated to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as an actor who was steady. Earned money working during the day as an usherette. She was a drama student in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
